Infant and Child Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care can help support the immune system, healing, motor skills and movement, as well as the nervous system by supporting the connection between your child’s brain and body. It can not only help improve cognitive function and focus, but also digestion, sleep and mood.
How do I know when my baby needs to be adjusted?
Feeding issues
-
Sometimes when the baby is uncomfortable, or there is a restriction in range of motion, it can affect how the baby feeds. You may notice this in the following ways:
-
Nursing (trouble latching, preferring to nurse on one side/vs the other, one nipple gets more sore than the other)
-
Bottle (Prefers to be held on one side vs. the other)
-
Digestive issues
-
Trouble pooping – Constipation is a sign that the digestive system needs attention. Chiropractic care can help make sure that the proper signaling from the brain to the digestive system is taking place and help move the bowel along without the “stall”. Diet is also a factor that may need to be addressed.
-
Excessive spitting up/reflux & gassiness- Some spitting up may be normal, due to over eating. However, the stomach and brain need to communicate to determine if the baby should continue to eat, or if he/she is full. When there is a miscommunication, overeating can occur and spitting up or gassiness is a common side affect. Chiropractic care to the abdomen as well as the spine can help improve the brain-body connection, thus helping relieve the excessive gassiness, spitting up, and/or reflux.
Mood/Sleep
-
Excessive crying (colic)
-
Needing to be held ALL of the time. (can’t lay them down for 5-10 minutes at a time)
-
Trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep **Babies have smaller stomachs, so they will naturally need to eat more often when they are younger.
When should I bring my child in for their first adjustment?
Whenever you are ready! They have been living and developing in a very confined space and in some cases, in some very awkward positions. Delivery can also be traumatic for the infant. It is a good idea to get them adjusted to help promote proper movement of the spine during development so they are developing the best biomechanics while learning how to roll, sit, crawl, stand and walk.
Sometimes flat spots can form on the skull due to reduced range of motion. Chiropractic can not only help with full rotation of the head, but also address the cranial bones.
